This document describes how to install and remove an icon vault from your computer. For details on specific icon vaults, refer to the TeachText document that accompanies each vault.
What are icon vaults?
---------------------
Icon vaults are a little-known feature of System 7’s Finder. They replace an item’s Finder icons without modifying the original item in any way.
When the Finder rebuilds its desktop files, it uses the icons within the icon vault in preference to the icons attached to an application.
Installing an Icon Vault
------------------------
If you already have a folder for icon vaults in your System Folder, go to step 2.
1. Create a folder named “ Icon Vaults” within the System Folder.
The space preceding the name is important. It allows the
Finder to find the icon vault information before any other files.
An empty “ Icon Vaults” folder is included with this package, so you can just drag it into your System Folder.
2. Copy the icon vault document into the Icon Vaults folder.
To store icon vault documents on your hard disk without using
their icons, place them in an archive (such as Stuffit or
DiskDoubler.)
3. Restart your computer.
Sometimes the Finder needs to rebuilt its desktop files to start using the icons within the icon vault document. If this is the case, follow step 4.
4. Rebuild the desktop.
After restarting your computer, hold down the Command and
Option keys until you see a message. Click OK for each disk you
would like to use the new icons with.
Removing an Icon Vault
----------------------
1. Remove the icon vault from your hard disk.
You can either drag the document to the Trash and choose
Empty Trash... from the Special menu, or place the document
within an archive for storage.
2. Rebuilt the desktop.
Icons associated with the old icon vault revert to their
original format.
